Speaking at a round table organized by TMPA, in partnership with the Algeciras Bay Port Authority and the Moroccan Association of Exporters (ASMEX), Mr. Abkari estimated that this agreement, concluded in 2019, “symbolizes the “commitment of the two countries towards enhanced cooperation, aimed at improving logistics capacities, port services, and promoting sustainable solutions to the challenges of modern maritime trade.”
“The port of Tanger Med has demonstrated its crucial role as a nerve center for trade, with remarkable performances in terms of container traffic and ship reception,” noted Mr. Abkari during this meeting in the presence of of the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, Enrique Ojeda Vila, under the theme “The maritime connection between the Port of Tangier Med and the Port of Algeciras: a model for the integration of regional logistics chains”.
After noting the port’s capacity to manage a massive amount of traffic and achieve record levels of productivity, testifying to its efficiency and strategic importance in the region, the official highlighted “the Atlantic Initiative, which translates the Royal Vision for continental development, and underlines Morocco’s commitment to using its infrastructure to support the development of countries in the South.
In this sense, Mr. Abkari stressed that Morocco plays a pivotal role in the economic development of the region, thus promoting stronger regional integration and improved access to global markets.
For his part, the president of ASMEX, Hassan Sentissi, declared that if maritime transport constitutes the largest link in the logistics chain at the global level. “Connections and synergies between the ports of Tanger Med and Algeciras, main ports in the Mediterranean, are expected to be strengthened for regional integration for the benefit of growth and trade with the European Union (EU)” , he added.
According to him, the smoothening of port passages and the reduction of transit times should improve through the strengthening of dematerialization and the digitalization of procedures at the two ports.
This day was an opportunity for participants, professionals and players in the industrial and maritime sectors, to examine the means of promoting trade between Morocco and Spain, and to explore current themes, in particular integration of the value chains of the two countries, and the importance of cooperation between the different actors on both sides of the Mediterranean to strengthen regional connectivity.
