“With a cumulative investment of nearly 16.4 billion euros (…) the Kingdom could become a major supplier” of the Old Continent in terms of green hydrogen to meet 5% of continental demand”, writes the specialist newspaper, noting that Morocco wants to become a “heavyweight in the sector”.
Referring to a study carried out by the German Fraunhofer Institute, which specializes in applied science research, the Spanish publication reports that Morocco is accelerating its production of green hydrogen to reach a total of 160 Terawatt-hours by 2050.
The Kingdom’s bet on green hydrogen was not long in coming, as colossal efforts have been made since 2021 to develop the value chain, the newspaper notes.
Quoting the director of the National Hydrogen Center, Emilio Nieto, the publication highlights that Spain and Italy have the possibility of being an entry point into Europe for the production of Moroccan green hydrogen.
For the official, the exploitation of Morocco’s potential requires the construction of an infrastructure physically connecting the Iberian Peninsula to North Africa and the rest of Europe. It is with this in mind that the Spanish hydrocarbon company Cepsa announced in 2022 the construction of a hydroduct to import green hydrogen from Morocco, the daily recalls.
Thanks to the “Offre Maroc” project for green hydrogen, the Kingdom has equipped itself with a roadmap for the production of green hydrogen aimed at diversifying its energy production and setting up an energy model favorable to the production of this type of energy, it is specified.
