MADRID, 8 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Morocco, Naser Burita, has defended in a meeting with the UN special envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, that the solution to the prolonged conflict passes “exclusively” through the autonomy plan that King Mohamed VI presented in 2007, therefore ruling out the possible self-determination claimed by the Polisario Front.

De Mistura has stopped in Rabat as part of a visit to the area that has also included stops in El Aaiún and Dakhla and the UN has barely offered any information. During his stopover in Rabat, he heard from Burita that the Moroccan authorities do not contemplate any concession in what they continue to describe as “the Moroccan Sahara.”

“The Moroccan delegation has recalled the constants of Morocco’s position,” reads the note released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which warns that any possible “political solution” cannot endanger “national sovereignty and integrity.” territory of the Kingdom”.

According to Rabat, De Mistura aims to “relaunch” the dialogue process with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario and, with this objective, he would have met with local authorities and representatives of civil society in Laayoune and Dakhla. In these meetings, he would have been able to listen to explanations about the economic and social advances and “the political and democratic dynamics,” Foreign Affairs indicates in its note.

The secretary general of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, has instead accused the Moroccan authorities of perpetrating serious violations of Human Rights coinciding with De Mistura’s visit, while once again calling for steps to be taken to decolonize the territory to allow the “self-determination and independence” of the Sahrawi people.

The trip to the area by the UN special envoy coincides with another parallel by the head of the United States Department of State for North African issues, Joshua Harris, who also met with Burita on Thursday. For Washington, the Moroccan autonomy plan is only a “potential approach” to resolving the conflict.
