In a statement to MAP, Mr. Al Mutairi stressed that this election undoubtedly confirms the confidence enjoyed by the Kingdom at the international level and the high-level executives it has, to “lead this council and achieve goals that we can be proud of as an Arab group.”

In this context, he expressed the support of the PAHRC for the efforts that Morocco will deploy during its presidency of the UN CDH, especially since the issue of human rights requires a broader dialogue on the consecration, protection and promotion of these rights, particularly following the dysfunctions that have hampered the human rights system in the application of international laws.

Expressing his pride in Morocco’s election to the presidency of the UN Human Rights Council, Mr. Al Mutairi, also Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the League of Arab States, indicated that this election is the fruit of the measures, laws and legislation that Morocco took, both at the national level and at the level of international action within the Human Rights Council.

In this regard, he considered that this election constitutes a new success for the Kingdom and the crowning of its efforts in the area of human rights.

He added that at the level of the Arab League, Morocco has played a crucial role in the work of the PAHRC through its positive initiatives, noting that the Kingdom’s adherence last December to the official launch of the Arab plan for human rights education reflects the interest that the Kingdom attaches to the issue of human rights education.

On Wednesday, Morocco was elected to the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the year 2024, during a vote held in Geneva.

Of the forty-seven members of the Council, 30 supported Morocco’s candidacy, compared to that of South Africa, which received only 17 votes.

A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad stressed that this election of Morocco, for the first time in its history, to the Presidency of this prestigious UN body, expresses recognition by the international community of the clairvoyance of the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, in matters of protection and promotion of human rights.
