Morocco Crowned Africa’s Leading Tourist Destination in 2025, Defying Global Economic Headwinds

A surge in international visitors has solidified Morocco’s position as the premier tourist destination in Africa, with the nation welcoming nearly 20 million travelers in 2025 – a 14% increase over 2024 figures. This remarkable growth comes amidst a challenging global landscape marked by rising costs and geopolitical uncertainty, signaling Morocco’s resilience and strategic success in the travel sector.

Africa’s Tourism Sector Shows Robust Growth

The success of Morocco is a key driver of the broader positive trend across the African continent. The region as a whole experienced an 8% increase in international arrivals, according to a report released Tuesday by UN Tourism. This growth underscores Africa’s increasing appeal as a diverse and attractive travel destination.

Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific region also demonstrated positive momentum, recording a 6% increase in international travelers.

Europe Remains the Global Tourism Powerhouse

Despite the gains in Africa and Asia, Europe continues to dominate the global tourism landscape. With France and Spain leading the way, the region totaled 793 million international arrivals in 2025. This represents a 4% increase compared to 2024 and a 6% increase when measured against pre-pandemic levels in 2019, demonstrating a strong recovery.

Strong Performance in the Americas

The Americas also saw notable growth, particularly in Brazil, which experienced a substantial 37% year-over-year increase in international tourism. This highlights the growing appeal of South American destinations to global travelers.

Morocco’s Tourism Roadmap Drives Success

According to the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism, Crafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, the country’s success is directly attributable to the implementation of the Tourism Roadmap 2023-2026. This strategic plan focuses on several key areas, including:

  • Strengthening air connectivity to facilitate easier access for international visitors.
  • Structuring accommodation capacities to meet the growing demand.
  • Diversifying the tourism offer beyond traditional attractions.
  • Improving the quality of services to enhance the visitor experience.
  • Stimulating territorial investment to promote sustainable tourism development.

Record Revenues Fuel Economic Growth

The positive tourism trends have translated into record financial gains for Morocco. Tourism revenues reached 124 billion dirhams by the end of November 2025, a 19% increase compared to the previous year. This confirms the vital role of tourism as a key engine for economic growth at the local and national levels.

Ambitious Goals for 2030

Looking ahead, Morocco has set ambitious goals for the future. The Kingdom aims to welcome 26 million tourists annually and establish itself as a leading global tourism destination by 2030. This commitment to continued growth and innovation positions Morocco for sustained success in the competitive international tourism market.
