Signed by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and the Ambassador of the United States of America to Morocco, Puneet Talwar, this plan aims to strengthen the actions carried out jointly with the American side and to contribute to the achievement of national objectives anchored in the National Sustainable Development Strategy and the New Development Model.

The action plan is structured around four priority areas for both parties, namely “environmental laws and regulations”, “climate change, green growth and economy”, “biodiversity conservation and management of protected areas” and “environmental education and transparency”.

In a statement to the press on this occasion, Ms. Benali affirmed that the signing of this action plan will make it possible to strengthen cooperative relations between Rabat and Washington in matters of biodiversity, environmental protection, sustainable development and energy transition.

This involves, particularly, “promoting training and encouraging the involvement of civil society and the population in important environmental projects, especially as the Kingdom is preparing to launch structural projects in various areas “, specified the minister.

This partnership, she continued, will significantly contribute to solving several challenges related to water scarcity and green hydrogen.

In a similar statement, the United States Ambassador to Morocco welcomed the close partnership relations between his country and Morocco, praising the role that the Kingdom plays as “leader in the strategic field of renewable energies.”

“This is a precise and detailed action plan which will affect several areas ranging from the enforcement of environmental laws and the protection of endangered species to the fight against plastic pollution and improving the quality of air”, explained Mr. Talwar, emphasizing the importance of involving citizens in these initiatives alongside governments.

In 2004, Morocco and the United States signed a Joint Declaration of Cooperation in the Environmental Field. The implementation of this Declaration is reflected in particular by the establishment of action plans developed and validated by the Environment Working Group (GTE) created for this purpose. In this context, three action plans were signed and implemented between 2005 and 2017.

Several agreements have been concluded between the two countries, notably in the areas of economy, defense, security, the fight against terrorism and extremism, diplomacy, energy, trade, investments, scientific research and technology, education, culture and sport.
