Morocco Braces for Cold Snap, Snowfall and Strong Winds on December 29th

A widespread cold front is sweeping across Morocco, bringing frigid temperatures, precipitation, and hazardous conditions to much of the country on Monday, December 29, 2025. The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued alerts for potential thunderstorms, snowfall, and strong wind gusts in several provinces.

Widespread Cold and Precipitation

Fairly cold weather is currently impacting the Atlas Mountains, the Rif region, and the high plateaus. Rainfall is expected across the Rif, the Middle Atlas and its western reaches, the Chaouia plains, the phosphate plateaus, and the Oulmes plateau, extending to the Mediterranean coast. Scattered showers are also forecast for the northern parts of the Oriental region, the High Atlas and its western slopes, the Tangier region, and along portions of the coasts and the North and Central Atlantic plains.

Hazardous Conditions Expected

Locally fairly strong wind gusts are anticipated over the Atlas Mountains, posing a risk to travelers and infrastructure. Snowfall is expected on the Atlas range, with localized accumulations also possible in the Rif region and the eastern highlands. Seas will range from beautiful to slightly rough in the Mediterranean, but conditions will deteriorate elsewhere, becoming slightly rough to rough on the Strait, and rough to very rough between Larache and Agadir. Elsewhere, seas will be slightly to moderately rough.

Temperatures are expected to be significantly below average, particularly in mountainous regions. Here’s a breakdown of the minimum and maximum temperatures forecast for key cities across Morocco:

  • Oujda: Min 5°C / Max 12°C
  • Bouarfa: Min 1°C / Max 8°C
  • Tetouan: Min 4°C / Max 14°C
  • Tangier: Min 10°C / Max 16°C
  • Rabat: Min 9°C / Max 17°C
  • Casablanca: Min 11°C / Max 16°C
  • Marrakech: Min 7°C / Max 16°C
  • Fez: Min 6°C / Max 13°C
  • Ifrane: Min 1°C / Max 2°C
  • Agadir: Min 8°C / Max 17°C
  • Laayoune: Min 11°C / Max 23°C

Minimum temperatures are forecast to dip as low as -04°C/02°C in the Atlas Mountains, 02°C/07°C in the Rif, the Oriental region, and the South-East. The Gharb, southern regions, and coastal areas may see minimums between 10°C/14°C, while the remainder of the country will experience temperatures between 07°C/10°C. A slight rise or stabilization in temperatures is anticipated throughout the day.

The Directorate of Meteorology advises residents to take necessary precautions against the cold and hazardous travel conditions. This developing weather situation will continue to be monitored closely.
