This election also reflects the prominent position that Morocco occupies in the field of human rights, as well as its commitment to consolidating the principles of human rights on all levels, national, regional and international, the Committee said in a statement.

The Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council confirms the Kingdom’s contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, added the same source, noting that this choice is likely to consolidate the network and complementarity between international and regional mechanisms.

In this sense, the Committee, which congratulated Morocco on this election, praised the Kingdom’s efforts in the field of human rights, citing in particular the promulgation of laws and the ratification of conventions to strengthen the protection of human rights.

It also concerns, according to the same source, the presence in the Kingdom of active national human rights institutions, within a framework of partnership and cooperation with international and regional organizations active in this field.

On Wednesday, Morocco was elected to the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the year 2024, during a vote held in Geneva.

Of the forty-seven members of the Council, 30 supported Morocco’s candidacy, compared to that of South Africa, which received only 17 votes.

A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad stressed that this election of Morocco, for the first time in its history, to the Presidency of this prestigious UN body, expresses recognition by the international community of the clairvoyance of the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, in matters of protection and promotion of human rights.
