Rabat – Morocco’s election to the Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the year 2024 crowns the rich experience accumulated by the Kingdom during three terms of active action within the Council, affirmed the President of the Atlas Center for the Analysis of Political and Institutional Indicators, Mohamed Bouden.
This election also constitutes a recognition of Morocco’s active and responsible contribution to the various United Nations mechanisms concerning issues of peace, development and human rights, Mr. Bouden told MAP, noting that the Kingdom has adopted a comprehensive and balanced approach for several years.
The Kingdom has participated in the development of several resolutions of the CDH in recent years, recalled Mr. Bouden, adding that Morocco will be the 18th President in the history of the Council and the first Arab and Maghreb country to hold the presidency of this dynamic institution since its foundation in 2006.
Morocco has garnered support from all corners of the world, particularly from Africa, thus achieving a strategic success, the expert noted, specifying that the Kingdom not only obtained the 24 votes necessary for the absolute majority, but also collected 30 votes against 17 for South Africa.
The election of the Kingdom to the presidency of the most important human rights mechanism in the United Nations system confirms its position within the international community, he said, stressing that it reflects the achievements of Moroccan diplomacy under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and reflects confidence in the Moroccan model based on the 2011 Constitution and best practices regarding socio-economic and cultural rights.
