Mortal Kombat Fans Gear Up for Sequel with New 4K Blu-ray Release & Legacy Collection

A limited edition 4K Blu-ray of the 2021 Mortal Kombat film is arriving October 7, just in time for fans to revisit the brutal adaptation ahead of Mortal Kombat II’s theatrical debut on October 24. The collectible Steelbook edition is currently available for preorder at Amazon for $35 and at Gruv for $30.

The new release caters to collectors with a striking design featuring Scorpion’s iconic mask on the front cover and his deadly kunai on the back. Inside, a still from the film showcases Sub-Zero preparing an ice-dagger weapon. The film itself is presented in upscaled 4K resolution with support for HDR10, and boasts immersive audio options including Dolby Atmos, TrueHD 7.1, and Digital 5.1.

While bonus materials aren’t explicitly listed for this edition, it’s possible that some special features from previous Blu-ray releases have been omitted. The 2021 4K release included a 1080p Blu-ray with bonus content, but this Limited Edition Steelbook contains only the single 4K disc. However, purchasers will receive a voucher for a digital version of Mortal Kombat, and the release is also compatible with Movies Anywhere, allowing for streaming and download across various platforms.

A Legacy of Kombat on Screen

The 2021 reboot successfully translated the fantastical and violent world of the beloved fighting game series to the big screen, pitting characters like Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Cole Young against the formidable Shang Tsung. But the cinematic universe of Mortal Kombat extends far beyond this recent installment.

Fans can explore the franchise’s history through a variety of available Blu-ray releases. The original 1995 film, described as “wonderfully cheesy,” is currently available for under $10, while its sequel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation, remains a source of unintentional humor. The live-action web-series Mortal Kombat Legacy, which ran for two seasons, offered a more grounded take on the source material. A “Triple Feature” Blu-ray containing both ‘90s films and the first season of Legacy is available for just $11.

Animated Brutality & a Retro Return

The animated Mortal Kombat Legends series has also garnered praise for its savage and visually striking adaptations. Four films have been released to date:

  • Scorpion’s Revenge (2020)
  • Battle of the Realms (2021)
  • Snow Blind (2022)
  • Cage Match (2023)

All four films are available on both 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray at affordable prices.

Looking ahead, Mortal Kombat enthusiasts have another exciting release to anticipate. The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, a retro game compilation, launches on consoles and PC on December 12. Preorders are currently open, and a dedicated preorder guide provides details on included games, bonuses, and available editions.

The enduring popularity of Mortal Kombat demonstrates the franchise’s ability to continually reinvent itself while staying true to its core appeal – visceral combat and compelling characters.
