In August 2021, 49,389 people died in Russia, who at the time of death were sick with COVID-19, which is 3% less than the updated July coronavirus death rate of 51,044 deaths, which is a record for the entire pandemic in Russia. This was announced on Friday, October 8, in the monthly operational report on the natural movement of the population by Rosstat. In total, since the beginning of the year, mortality among patients with coronavirus has exceeded 250 thousand people against 163.3 thousand for the entire last year.

The August indicator for the Rosstat nomenclature includes:

  • 38,603 cases, where COVID is recognized as the leading cause of death;
  • 4,977 cases where COVID is suspected as the main cause but more research is needed;
  • 1 254 deaths – the coronavirus was a concomitant disease, accelerating the death of the patient;
  • 4,555 deaths – coronavirus was a concomitant disease, but did not affect the death.

In July, the covid mortality rate in Russia jumped sharply, exceeding 50 thousand for the first time, amid the spread of a more dangerous delta strain of coronavirus. Over the last two summer months, the number of deaths among patients with coronavirus exceeded 100 thousand cases.

According to data for August, 97% of the total increase in mortality in the country by the same month of last year was due to mortality with COVID. Until the spring of 2021, the official covid mortality explained the excess mortality by 60-70% (Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova explained this, among other things, by the fact that there are a lot of cases where the death could be associated with the indirect influence of the pandemic.
