On June 16, the summit of the Presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, took place in Geneva. On the eve of the meeting, President Putin in an interview with NBC announced his readiness to discuss the exchange of prisoners with his American counterpart.

At the end of the press conference, Putin said that compromises could be found with respect to Russians serving sentences in the United States and American prisoners in Russia. He added that the Russian Foreign Ministry and the US State Department will start working in this direction.

Konstantin Yaroshenko was detained in 2010 in Liberia. He was then extradited to the United States, where he was accused of drug smuggling. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Victor Bout was arrested in Thailand in 2008, and two years later he was extradited to the United States, where he was accused of trying to sell a consignment of weapons to a Colombian terrorist group. In 2012, an American court sentenced him to 25 years in prison. Booth himself pleaded not guilty. Moscow has repeatedly asked to deport him, Washington refused.

In Russia, US citizen Paul Whelan was sentenced to 16 years in a strict regime colony. He is accused of espionage. Whelan himself denies his guilt.
