Mosquitoes Carrying Rare Virus Threaten Part of Massachusetts – Health & Wellness

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 26 – There are 10 communities in Massachusetts in the United States that have been put on public health alert due to the presence of mosquitoes carrying the Western Equine Encephalitis virus. A few days ago, a town in the state – Oxford – voluntarily went into evening lockdown for fear of the spread of the virus. But now – according to Massachusetts health officials – the concern is spreading to other areas. The advice to the population includes avoiding going out at dusk and in the evening, covering up as much as possible and using repellent spray. Evening sporting events, including school events, have been suspended in all at-risk areas. Three cases of the disease affecting people have recently been reported in the US: in Vermont and New Jersey.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that Western equine encephalitis (EEE) “is a rare but serious disease,” transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus – they specify – presents a “significant” health risk. Most cases are asymptomatic or cause little discomfort, but about 30% of infections can trigger brain inflammation, which in turn can trigger permanent neurological damage. There is no vaccine or cure for the disease. The most common symptoms are: fever, headache, vomiting and diarrhea. In the most serious cases, even epilepsy and coma. (ANSA).
