Currently, 51,123 people have the citizenship of Latvia and another country, of which 10,714 have the declared residence in Latvia. There are 129 such countries, and 40 are those with which such dual status is allowed, but there are exceptional cases when it is also possible with others. For the most part, a person has to choose which country’s citizenship to keep until the age of 25.
Most – in Great Britain and the USA
The largest number of such persons with dual citizenship live in Great Britain – 10,856, followed by the United States, which previously held the first place, – 9,268, Israel – 5,383, Russia – 4,049, Germany – 3,230, Ireland – 2,878, Australia – 2,832, Canada – 2,591, Sweden – 1827. Almost half of the total number of dual citizens are children and young people up to 25 years of age, Sanda Cielēna, the head of the Personal Status Control Department of the Citizenship and Migration Affairs Administration (PMLP), informed at the session of the Saeima’s Citizenship, Migration and Community Cohesion Commission.
Regarding Russia, this status is possible with this country if the child registers Latvian citizenship up to the age of 18 (it is at this age that there are the most of these persons – almost 2,500), as well as for exiles, descendants of deported persons and Latvians. This group also includes those Latvian descendants whose ancestors emigrated to Russia at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, but then this fact must be proven. If it is not written in your passport that you are Latvian, then you must have relevant documents of your ancestors. If there are none, then you have to go to court or use the naturalization process to obtain citizenship.
