Most of the world’s citizens no longer live in a democracy. How did it happen?

After the great democratization wave of the 1990s following the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, the pendulum is now swinging back in a more autocratic direction. While in 2001 the majority of the world’s population lived in some form of democracy, in 2021 it is less than a third.

One of the countries that most influenced the index is India, whose population is over one billion people. Since the re-election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, the status of civil society has deteriorated, and India as a whole has dropped in the ranking. Turkey has also become more autocratic over time.
