The controversy over the Hindi national language, which is high in the film industry, is heating up again. Singer Sonu Nigam is the latest to join the fray with Kannada actor Kichha Sudeepa and Bollywood star Ajay Devgn. He said that although most people speak it, Hindi is not the national language.

Nowhere in the Constitution is it mentioned that Hindi is the national language. Tamil is the oldest language. But there is a dispute between Tamil and Sanskrit in this regard. In an interview to Karnataka Tak news channel, Sudeepa said that Hindi is not the national language when asked about films like KGF and Pushpa gaining international attention. He had asked why Hindi films were not called Pan Indian films and which film got a good response from their audience today.

Ajay Devgn responded by tweeting in Hindi. He said that Hindi will always be our mother tongue and national language. Sudeepa also said that she did not try to provoke any kind of controversy as she would give what she really meant in person.

Responding to the incident, Sonu Sood said that he did not think Hindi could be called the national language. Sanskrit predates Hindi, Tamil and Kannada. Actress Kangana Ranaut had said that Sanskrit should be the national language.
