Most UK residents don’t know basic facts about the Holocaust

by time news

A poll conducted in the UK by the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, which seeks compensation from Germany for the damage inflicted by the Nazi regime on the victims of the Holocaust, found that 52% of the country’s citizens were unaware of the Nazi massacre of 6 million Jews. … 22% of respondents suggested that the number of victims of the Holocaust does not exceed 2 million, and 32% could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto.

“We are very concerned about the lack of knowledge about the Holocaust, including related events, found in this and in previous polls,” said the organization’s president, Gideon Taylor. For example, 67% of respondents believed that the British government allowed Jewish immigration, although Jewish refugees were not allowed into the country since the beginning of the war. Between 1938 and 1939, about 10,000 Jewish children were brought to England during the Kindertransport operation, but 76% of the survey participants did not know anything about it.

Claims Conference has conducted similar surveys in other countries, including the United States, France, Austria and Canada. The results of these surveys are generally close to those of the UK survey. France stands out against this background, where 57% of respondents did not know that 6 million Jews were exterminated in the Holocaust. In the United States, 48% of participants in a 2020 survey did not know the exact answer to this question.
