Impact cinema, or how narratives can influence perceptions and behaviors related to important issues such as the integration of refugees. “Lights! Camera! Impact! From moving pictures to moving ideas and action” is an exploration and celebration of cinema that puts creativity at the service of social issues. Organized by The Human Safety Net, this is a meeting of directors and pioneers of impact storytelling held on the occasion of the eightieth Venice International Film Festival at the House of The Human Safety Net, at the Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza San Marco. A unique space, opened last year to the public for the first time in 500 years, after a complex restoration work by the architect David Chipperfield with the aim of creating a special place to welcome discussion and dialogue on the themes of inclusion and social impact.

“Impact cinema can do a lot – explains Emma Ursich Secretary General of Hunan Safety net – because it tells stories and stories are the best way to go deep inside and also reach people by making them understand that behind large numbers, things that seem so much far away, in the end there are people like us”. The evening was the occasion for the screening of the Italian preview of “Portrait of a Stranger” resulting from the collaboration between UNHCR and the award-winning directors Platon and Anadil Hossain. Among the guests in the room the photographer and recorder Platon and the stylist Diane von Fürstenberg.

“For more than five years, the foundation has been involved in promoting integration through work – commented Ursich – both employees and small businesses. We do this in four countries, Italy, Germany, France and Switzerland, because we believe it is the best way to guarantee the future for these people; a sustainable future and also full integration into the communities that welcome them”.

Gabriele Galateri di Genola, President of The Human Safety Net Foundation, commented: “We are happy to promote a dialogue that sees the crucial issue of integration intertwine with the various narratives that are drawn from it in the media. In particular, the power of cinematic representation can help us look differently at the voices and life experiences of people seeking a future elsewhere. With The Human Safety Net, our mission is to provide concrete support to those who intend to build an entrepreneurial or work path, as a strategic element for integration, providing tools to develop talents and skills”.
