Eliaide, mother of Catiuscia Machado, 43, a Brazilian woman found dead in Australia last weekend, spoke in an interview with Record. She told details about her daughter’s relationship with her boyfriend, Diogo de Oliveira, arrested on suspicion of having committed the crime, and how she received the news of the death.
Catiuscia had lived in Sydney with her boyfriend since March this year and maintained daily contact with her mother via text messages and calls. It was precisely this habit that made Eliaide suspect something was wrong.
“I tried calling her, sent several messages and tried to start a conversation. She was online, but she didn’t answer me. After a while, she said: ‘Mom, I’m here at the airport. We’re going to Thailand”, recalls Eliaide .
The daughter said that Diogo had some problem when boarding, but the mother didn’t understand the message. She would be anticipating the trip that was being planned for the end of the year. The plans were to spend the Brazilian’s birthday in the Asian country at the end of the year.
On Monday (27), two days after the last contact between the two, the mother received a call from someone who spoke English and needed the help of her son to find out what was happening.
“Catiuscia was found lifeless in the bathtub, with ice on her body,” Australian police told the family over the phone.
Murder and previous crime
The mother says that authorities in Australia reported that her daughter died after being punched and hitting her head when she fell. When the body was found, it was in a bathtub filled with ice.
“I don’t know what his intention was to put ice on his body. I think his intention was to escape”, says the mother.
Eliaide found out from a friend of Catiuscia that she had wanted to break up with her boyfriend for about three weeks. Diogo would be drinking too much and “disrupting her life”.
“I didn’t understand why she didn’t take the step of leaving, since she hadn’t been able to handle the situation for three weeks”, the mother tries to understand.
Eliaide says that Diogo recently got a visa to the USA and that his daughter did not intend to go with him. She wanted to finish the course she was taking and was satisfied with the job. The Brazilian was a psychopedagogue and taught classes for children with disabilities.
“She told me that she had a happy life. I had no reason to say: ‘Wow! She’s suffering'”, says the mother, who believes that her daughter’s decision not to go with her boyfriend and stay in Australia was reason for fights.
According to Eliaide, her daughter’s boyfriend is responding to a Maria da Penha Law process relating to a relationship before moving country, but does not know the details of the case. Diogo was reportedly imprisoned for a month after neighbors called the police because of a fight with his ex-partner.
Burial in Rio Grande do Sul
The family has begun procedures to bring Catiuscia’s body from Australia, but the process depends on the progress of the crime investigation. She will be buried in the city of Canoa, in Rio Grande do Sul.
“I want to one day get in his face and ask why he did this to my daughter, who only gave him affection and love”, concludes Eliaide.
The Brazilian woman’s mother says that 35 years ago her eldest son died. “It’s another scar that only God can heal,” she says.
