Little Thomás Rodríguez went to the doctor at the beginning of last year for pain in one of his legs. His parents thought it was something related to his volleyball class or a normal growing up malaise.

They never imagined that a year later they would be in Bogotá living one block from the La Misericordia Pediatric Hospital, outside of their native Villavicencio, looking for a treatment that could increase the chances of life for Thomas, who has already received all available treatments for his illness. in Colombia and despite that he has had two early relapses.

Doctors in Colombia have told her that except for a treatment that barely has a 5% chance of being effective, her son has only palliative care left. However, Diana, her mother, found that at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Barcelona (Spain), there is a treatment that increases the chances of survival of her little one from 44% to 80%.

The treatment is called Car T Cells and consists of using the patient’s own cells to destroy those with leukemia. This is a new paradigm of therapy that allows personalization of management against acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common type of cancer among children. The San Juan de Dios Hospital in Barcelona is the first pediatric center in the Iberian country authorized to offer this therapy, with which it has treated more than 40 patients between 2016 and 2020.

Diana has already sent the doctor in Spain all the information and medical history of Tomás, and the hospital is ready to receive them. The problem is that he has a value of $600,000 euros and, since the little one is not a citizen of the European Union, he must pay the full fee.

That is why he is turning to the solidarity of Colombians to pay for his son’s treatment. “If three million people donate $1,000, we will achieve our goal,” says Diana hopefully.
