Grieving Mother Speaks Out After Being Accused of Causing her Son’s Death

The nightmare began at the end of September for a mother who found her four-month-old baby dead in a hotel room in Växjö. In an emotional interview with P4 Kronoberg’s Daniel Forsberg, she described the heart-wrenching moment when she woke up in the middle of the night to find her son cold to the touch.

After rushing to the emergency room with her baby, the mother was shocked to be taken into custody by the police. “I am told that I am suspected of causing the death of another. I didn’t understand anything. I was taken to the detention center, had to hand over all my belongings and sat on a small, cold floor without being allowed to talk to anyone, without receiving help or support at all,” she told P4 Kronoberg.

Despite being released after two days, the mother has been living with the trauma and uncertainty of not knowing the cause of her son’s death. On November 30, prosecutor Pernilla Granqvist announced that the preliminary investigation had been closed. The autopsy report was inconclusive, showing that the cause of death could not be determined, but there was also nothing to suggest that the cause of death was illness.

The mother, who had been caring for her son who was born with a heart murmur and was medicated for arrhythmia, has stated that she has gone over the events of that night countless times and believes she could not have done anything differently.

She is now speaking out and directing criticism at the police and prosecutors for the way they handled her case, saying, “That you take a mother who has just lost everything and put her in jail. There must be limits to how to treat a bereaved person.”

Despite her grief, she has not heard from the police or prosecutor in two months and has had to bury her son without closure. “I have paid the highest price. I will always blame myself in some way. But to also have a serious criminal suspicion on you, it is impossible to describe how much it hurt,” she said.

The mother’s heartbreaking story has sparked a national conversation about the treatment of grieving individuals by law enforcement and the justice system. As she continues to cope with the loss of her child, she hopes that her experience will lead to changes in how bereaved individuals are treated during investigations.
