When Hyundai Tucson, which won the Motor Vikatan award last time, was inspired by some things from ‘Ionic 5’, the enthusiasts opened their eyes and said, “My Ionic 5 is…”. Yes, such Ioniq 5 is one of the most anticipated cars in India. An electric car that will make global appeal. The car Ioniq 5 won the World Car of the Year and World Design of the Year awards in 2022. This is the 2nd electric car that Hyundai will launch after the Kona.

Like the Kia EV6, this is the Hyundai Group’s e-GMP (Global Modular Platform)-ready electric crossover car. However, Hyundai has won applause by positioning it at around Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom) cheaper than the Kia EV6. Its price is Rs.44.95 lakhs. The reason is that it is not going to be sold on a CBU basis like the Kia. The reason for this affordable price is that it is manufactured locally through the CKD method. (Important note: this price is for the first 500 customers only!) Meanwhile, Hyundai has launched the Ioniq 5 with similar… if not more premium features to the EV6.

Hyundai showcased the 45 EV concept at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show. Its final product is the Ionic 5. It is styled in a retro-futuristic design language with sharp lines, minimalistic design, jean for an SUV, raised windshields. The headlight assembly itself was unique in its ‘B’ shape. The taillight was also unique. The 20-inch alloy wheels were quite stylish in the Turbine design. It is available in 3 paint shades.

Minimalistic as far as interiors are concerned. Flat floor, flexible seats, movable center console, recycled plastics and eco-friendly leather seats are mixed.

Touch screen 12.3 inches and instrument cluster 12.3 inches; The head-up display with AR function is said to be premiumness based on Atas technology. It also has V2L (Vehicle to Load) facility with 3.6kW output. With this, actor Shah Rukh Khan said, “We turned on the lights of the Gateway of India with 3 Ionic cars.” The V2L can be used in 2 ways: under the rear seat and outside the car next to the charging port.

It is only available in rear wheel drive option. The power of this electric motor is 217bhp and 350Nm of torque. The battery packs 72.6kWh of power. Hyundai says its range is around 631 km. It also has superfast 800V charging that delivers 10 – 80% charging in just 18 minutes.

Ionic 5 is expected to win many awards in India as well.

Ionic 6

This Ionic 6 car can be said to be the older brother of Ionic 5. Hyundai was just displaying this in its pavilion. Sportiness oozes from flush door handles, a collapsing coupe roof, and a tail light strip that runs the length of the car at the rear. The car looks as if it has been prepared with only aerodynamic silhouette in mind for race cars. Its aerodynamic Drag Co-Efficient is 0.21cd.

It has 2 battery packs. The entry level will charge 53kWh; The top-end Ioniq 6 also gets a 77kWh battery pack. A rear wheel drive motor is a single motor. It also has an all-wheel drive setup. Hyundai gives it dual electric motors. Its power is 320bhp and 605Nm of torque. Its range according to the WLTP drive cycle is 429 km for the 53kWh rear-wheel drive version; 583 km for all-wheel drive; Hyundai also claims 614 km for the 77.4kWh battery version.

There is no word on when the Ionic 6 will arrive in India.

Hyundai showcased a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Its name is Nexo. It is also a crossover car with a futuristic design language. Its length is 4,760 mm; Width 1,860 mm; Height 1,630 mm. Its wheelbase is 2,790 mm.

Inside the car was a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 7-inch instrument cluster. Features like powered tailgate, sunroof, Krell sound system are also plentiful.

This 5-door crossover SUV has a 95kW hydrogen fuel cell and a 40kW battery pack. The power of this electric motor is 161bhp and 395Nm of torque. Hyundai claims it will do 0-100 kmph in just 9.2 seconds. Its top speed is around 179 kmph. of this

Hyundai claims a WLTP range of around 666 km.

There is no information on when this hydrogen car will come to India.

Hyundai Motors India also showcased connected car and ADAS technology at the expo.
