Bettina Höbenreich and Helmut Koch led a tranquil life in Upper Bavaria. Rock solid and caught in the hamster wheel. Dreams they once had had been pushed aside by everyday life to the point where they were barely tangible. Until that one after-work beer in 2009. Suddenly this big trip was in the room: Australia – without backpacks, but with a motorbike. Two years later, the crazy idea became reality.

Reach Australia overland, that was the goal. It quickly became clear that this would be a different trip than the typical all-inclusive hotel vacations they had taken up to then. They took two years to raise enough money for their dream of great freedom. They looked for part-time jobs and sold almost everything they owned.

Around the world on a motorcycle

“If someone had told me a few years ago that I would one day ride a motorcycle around the world, I would have thought they were crazy. Now I’m on my motorcycle, no longer have a job, no apartment, and everything I do still own, fits into two aluminum suitcases and a roll bag,” writes Höbenreich in “Motorcycle Adventure World Tour”. In the book, the couple tells their very personal story about dreams, freedom and the long journey to get there.

Australia became a trip around the world, and a planned break became a tour across five continents. From Germany it went to North Asia, via Southeast Asia to Oceania, South America to the Caribbean and North America. The adventure lasted five years, and in the end they had covered 155,000 kilometers on their bikes.

In Indonesia, orangutans were rewarded for long journeys down potholed roads. They haggled with policemen in Cambodia and saw a starry sky in the Andes that they will never forget. “There are moments in life that are burned into our memories forever,” says Höbenreich. “Tonight is one of them.”
