Lenovo—the company that bought Motorola in 2014—responded to the decision of the national justice system to suspend the import and sale in Colombia of Motorola cell phones, after studying three lawsuits of “infringement of industrial property rights,” which multinational company Ericsson had filed with the competent authorities. “We are disappointed that Ericsson continues to seek injunctive relief when Lenovo has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness, backed by a secured bond, to obtain a license on FRAND terms,” the press release reads.

The measure to which Lenovo refers was taken by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, which covers eight series of Motorola phones. Namely: Motorola ThinkPhone (Model XT2309-2), Motorola Razr 40 Ultra (Model XT2321-1), Motorola Razr 40 (Model XT2323-1), Motorola Edge 40 (Model -2), Motorola Edge 30 Fusion (Model XT2243-1), Motorola Edge 30 Neo (Model XT2245-1), Motorola Edge 30 Pro (Model XT22101-1) and Moto G200 (Model XT2175-1).

“As a global technology leader, Lenovo respects investment in innovation, but is committed to driving greater equity in licensing negotiations to ensure more consumer access to technology. “Ericsson’s use of injunctive relief against a willing licensee is exactly the type of behavior that national courts and proposed global regulation should address,” said John Mulgrew Deputy, General Counsel and Global Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Lenovo.

In addition to the withdrawal of the indicated series of phones, Lenovo must pay a bond for $2.7 billion pesos, according to experts in Colombian legislation.
