Chinese scientists have accurately measured the thickness of snow on the summit of Everest with a ground penetrating radarwith a result of 9.5 +/- 1.2 meters.

The data, published in The Cryosphere magazinewere obtained in May last year during an expedition to Mount Qomolangma (Chinese name for Everest).

By adopting radar profile measurement methods, the expedition team used the 1000 MHz thickness measurement radar to measure along the exposed bedrock at the top and gradually up to the topsaid Yang Wei, a researcher at the Tibetan Plateau Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, quoted by Xinhua.

He added that radar measurements showed a gradually increasing transition of snow depth along the northern slope, This made it easier for researchers to accurately interpret the data.

The survey results will provide supporting data for the study of the dynamic changes of the ultra-high altitude cryosphere and lithosphere atop the world’s highest peak, and will also provide an new direction for a deeper understanding of ultra-high altitude climate changessaid Yao Tandong, leader of the scientific expedition.
