Mountaineer dies after falling from Capitol Hill

A Colorado hiker died after falling about 900 feet while climbing Mount Capitol Peak on Saturday. Local authorities received a call just before 8 a.m. from a hiker in the area who saw the woman fall from what she believed to be between 1,500 and 2,000 feet below the summit into the Fair Lakes Basin, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Her body was moved from the area after crews launched a rescue mission with 25 volunteers, two Pitkin County sheriff’s deputies and flight crews. The woman, who witnesses said was traveling alone, was from Denver, the sheriff’s office said. Her name was not immediately released, pending family notification.
