With “extraordinary luck”, a New Zealand mountaineer survived a 600-meter fall. According to local police on Monday, the climber was lucky enough to fall right into a very deep layer of snow and only suffered minor injuries.
According to police spokesman Vaughan Smith, the man was with a group on Saturday afternoon on his way to the summit of Mount Taranaki, more than 2,500 meters high, when he lost his balance and fell into the depths. Thanks to the spring weather, the ice softened and the snow softened the fall from it. “He’s very lucky to be alive,” Smith said.
A “deadly” mountain
Mount Taranaki on New Zealand’s North Island is one of the country’s “deadliest mountains,” according to the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council. Due to the risk of avalanches and low temperatures throughout the year, the nature conservation agency recommends “special preparation and skills” before climbing the mountain.
“If something goes wrong while climbing there, it often has serious consequences,” Smith also explained. Just two years ago, two mountaineers suffered fatal accidents in the same area.
