by time news

Despite the best efforts of the hospital doctors, the 17-year-old student who was transferred to Bostanio yesterday in a critical condition and remained intubated in the Intensive Care Unit was ultimately unable to survive.

This is the girl who had moved all of Lesbos when, at the age of 11 in 2019, she underwent surgery to stand on her feet as she was confined to a wheelchair with her laudable parents always by her side.

Before he even understood the world

For Maria – Taxiarchoula, nothing was easy, as before she even understood the world, a 6-month-old infant was struck by a form of leukemia aggressive enough that the doctors of the Children’s Hospital, where she was treated in Athens, did not leave much room for hope for the two parents giving her a life of 2 – 3 months. She underwent a bone marrow transplant as a compatible graft was found and her case, which was aired on the Athenian channels at the time, moved the whole of Greece. From the 2-3 months of life given by the doctors, according to the scientific data for these cases, the child managed to defeat the disease, even at a heavy price.

Due to complications after the bone marrow transplant Children’s doctors were forced to proceed with heavy cortisone treatment to keep her immune system down.

Due to these treatments, the child suffered osteoporosis, as well as neurological problems which significantly affected his mobility, resulting in him being confined to a wheelchair.

Despite the surgery, Maria did not manage to stand on her feet and finally the fate occurred today in Bostanio due to complications from a respiratory infection. Leaving her parents inconsolable as the whole local community knows how much they fought for her and in fact the News of Lesvos had highlighted human history.

The funeral will take place tomorrow at 15:30 from the parish of Varia.
