“The drafting of [Journal du dimanche] voted this Friday, July 28 at 96% in favor of the renewal of the strike movement”, could we read in a statement issued by the Society of Journalists, on this 36th day of mobilization. The publication of the next issue should be prevented from doing so on Sunday. It is even considered « impossible »according to a journalist from JDD who spoke to Agence France-Presse at a rally this morning.
More than twenty journalists from the weekly met this morning near the Ministry of Culture, where a delegation was then to be received by the cabinet of Rima Abdul Malak. In the press release issued before this meeting, they called on the Minister to “to change the law as quickly as possible in order to guarantee the editorial and legal independence of editorial staff”. And in particular want the management to renounce the appointment of Geoffroy Lejeune – who came from the newspaper Current valuesmarked on the far right –, who is due to take office on August 1.

The current movement – five weekends in a row without publication – is, in any case, unprecedented in the history of the newspaper founded in 1948: its previous strike, in 2016, had only affected one Sunday.
The editorial staff stopped work on June 22 to contest the arrival of Geoffroy Lejeune and to demand guarantees of legal and editorial independence. Many observers see in the appointment of Mr. Lejeune the action of the billionaire Vincent Bolloré, whose Vivendi group must swallow Lagardère, owner of the JDDafter a successful takeover bid.
This put the subject of media independence back on the policy table. On Wednesday July 19, deputies from eight political groups (excluding RN and LR) presented a bill to the National Assembly aimed at protecting the editorial freedom of the media seeking state aid.
