Haifa – A trip to Israel is always not just a football game, but much more. The leadership of 1. FC Union around President Dirk Zingler recently visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem before the Conference League game against Maccabi Haifa.
“We felt a deep need to use our official trip to Israel to visit this special place and I am very grateful that we could be here,” said President Zingler. At the memorial on the Herzlberg, built in 1953, Zingler and Co. took a tour, accompanied by a representative from the Israeli embassy in Berlin, and laid a wreath.
“To be confronted so directly here today with the atrocities of Nazi Germany against the Jews of Europe makes us speechless and sad. We take with us impressions that will occupy us for a long time and that none of us will forget. Our generation is not responsible for these acts. But we have to learn from history and we are responsible today and in the future that it does not repeat itself, ”said Zingler, visibly moved.

The Union boss is also concerned with the present. Zingler warned: “Unfortunately, anti-Semitism is still present in our society and we are all called upon to fight it consistently. I am convinced that football, with its cultural diversity, can serve as a model to promote tolerance and to counter all forms of misanthropy and discrimination. “
