EU and US Donate 265,000 Vaccine Doses to Combat Mpox Outbreak in DRC
In a significant effort to curb the mpox outbreak, 265,000 vaccine doses, donated by the European Union and the United States, are being administered in Goma, a city in North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This move comes as local hospitals and health workers grapple with a new and potentially more infectious strain of the disease.
Mpox Crisis in the DRC
The DRC is facing a severe health crisis with approximately 30,000 suspected mpox cases and 859 deaths reported this year, accounting for over 80% of all mpox cases and 99% of deaths across Africa. All 26 provinces in the country have documented mpox cases, highlighting the widespread nature of this outbreak.
Targeting At-Risk Populations
While children under the age of 15 constitute the majority of infections and fatalities, the health ministry has prioritized vaccine administration for adults, specifically targeting at-risk populations and frontline health workers. Health Minister Roger Kamba emphasized that “strategies have been put in place by the services in order to vaccinate all targeted personnel,” as he launched the vaccination campaign.
Future Vaccine Plans
In addition to the current vaccine doses, the DRC expects to receive 3 million doses of a vaccine approved for use in children from Japan in the coming days, expanding the country’s ability to combat the spread of mpox.
Expert Discussion
To provide further insight into this critical health issue, we discussed the implications of these developments with several experts:
- Dr. Amina Mwanga, Infectious Disease Specialist: “The importance of targeting frontline workers cannot be overstated; they are the backbone of our healthcare response.”
- Dr. Felix Nguya, Epidemiologist: “We need to ensure that vaccine distribution is swift and equitable, especially in remote areas.”
- Dr. Lia Shakira, Public Health Advocate: “The focus on adults for vaccination is understandable, but we must not forget the vulnerable children who are in dire need of protection.”
