The MPOX virus is spreading rapidly in Congo, with over 1,000 cases reported every month, raising concerns of a new global health crisis. The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm as the disease begins to spread internationally once again.

Initially thought to have been contained after the state of emergency was lifted in 2022, the virus, also known as monkeypox, has re-emerged, with outbreaks reported in some Asian countries as well. WHO specialist, Rosamund Lewis, expressed concern over the rapid increase in cases and the potential international transmission of the virus.

MPOX, originally found in rodents in West and Central Africa, can be transmitted through direct contact, as well as person-to-person transmission through close contact, including sexual intercourse. While the virus is generally milder than smallpox, it can still be severe and, in rare cases, fatal. Typical signs of the disease include fever and skin pustules.

Authorities in Kinshasa have reported over 13,000 suspected cases, with over 600 deaths recorded this year. Of particular concern is the fact that more women than men are being affected in the affected regions, leading to suspicions of a connection to sex work in Congo. The WHO has sent a team of experts to the Central African country and is intensively working on developing a vaccine.

The WHO has recorded over 92,000 cases in 117 countries since May 2022, with reported cases increasing from around 100 per month to over 1,000 per month. Asian countries such as Japan, Vietnam, China, and Indonesia are particularly affected, with increasing outbreaks being reported.

The re-emergence of the MPOX virus has raised concerns globally and highlights the need for urgent action to contain and address the spread of the disease. The WHO’s efforts to monitor and develop potential vaccines are crucial in tackling this escalating health crisis.]
