Trump is “talking about bloodshed if he loses,” Biden told NBC News anchor Lester Holt.

While he stressed the need to “turn the temperature down in our politics” after the attack, Mr. Biden said Mr. Trump’s own rhetoric had heated up the campaign ahead of November’s presidential election. “Look, I’m not the guy who said I want to be a dictator on day one,” Biden said, referring to Trump’s earlier remarks.

“I’m not the guy who refused to accept the election results. I’m not the guy who said he wouldn’t automatically accept the results of this election. I did not indulge in such rhetoric (…) My opponent indulged in such rhetoric,” Mr. Biden asserted.

After Saturday’s attack on Trump, Mr. Biden called for unity and repeatedly condemned the attack. “In America, we resolve disagreements at the ballot box, not with bullets,” Mr. Biden said in his official address to the nation from the White House on Sunday evening.

When asked by L. Holt what he himself could do to “cool down” the political debate, Mr. Biden indicated: “Keep talking about things that matter to the American public.”

“It’s important if you’re talking about, for example, how you’re going to deal with the border, instead of calling people pests. (…) This kind of rhetoric is incendiary,” Mr. Biden said.

Some of Mr. Trump’s staunchest supporters accuse Mr. Biden of partially responsible for the attack because of his rhetoric.

Mr. Biden has repeatedly described his rival as an existential threat to democracy.
