Mr. Gražulis complains about the decision of the CEC not to register him as a candidate for the elections to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania

by times news cr

As indicated in the statement issued by the politician, the complaint asks the court to grant him the right to be registered as a candidate in the 2024 Seimas elections of the Republic of Lithuania and to additionally apply to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania for an official clarification related to his right to run for office, taking into account the practice of the European Court of Human Rights in similar cases in other European countries.

According to P. Gražulis, although the Constitution stipulates that a person removed from office in the impeachment process can occupy a certain position only after at least ten years, this provision does not apply to the right of candidacy.

Last week, the CEC announced the decision not to register the chairman of the Union of People and Justice (centrists, nationalists) Petros Gražulis as a candidate in the upcoming Seimas elections.

Mr. Gražulis mentioned his intention to lead the party to the upcoming Seimas elections at the beginning of August this year.

The CEC emphasized already at that time that the Constitution provides for a 10-year ban on running for the Seimas for parliamentarians who have lost their mandate through impeachment.

ELTA reminds that the Constitutional Court found Mr. Gražulis to have grossly violated the Constitution and broken his oath after he voted for another parliamentarian.
