Speaking at the opening of the 3rd edition of the “Agro IT Days” organized last Friday in Meknes, under the theme “Digital transformation at the heart of the Generation Green strategy”, Mr. Rahhou indicated that technology has always accompanied agriculture since the industrial revolution, emphasizing the digital offer on the market of companies and start-ups in this area.
The president of the competition council dwelt on the difficult conditions faced by professionals in the sector, particularly with regard to climatic hazards, production, marketing, the availability of inputs and diseases, noting, moreover, that “the competition between agricultural and urban land is an issue that challenges public officials”.
Mr. Rahhou also addressed water policy in Morocco through domestic, agricultural and industrial uses of water, stressing the need to rethink the model of billing, use and cost of water to boost investments in the various sectors of economic activity.
Speaking on this occasion, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki, stressed that digitalization is part of the cross-cutting projects of the “Green Generation” strategy and aims to enable Moroccan agriculture to be resilient, competitive, but also and above all innovative and attractive for professionals in the sector in general, and for young people and new generations of farmers and entrepreneurs in particular.
He said that the objective of the digitalization project is to connect 2 million farmers and users to agricultural e-services by 2030.
The Minister also highlighted the efforts made by the Ministry to successfully align its digital transformation roadmap with its strategies, since the launch of the Green Morocco Plan in 2008, while emphasizing the importance of digital transformation for all stakeholders in the agricultural value chain, particularly farmers, who, thanks to digital transformation, are able to achieve better profitability of farms, improve their working and living conditions and reduce the impact of intermediaries.
This event is organized in accordance with the royal guidelines aimed at giving particular importance to New Information and Communication Technologies to improve the governance of the country’s various economic and social development programs and offer a quality public service to Moroccan citizens.
It is also part of the recommendations of the New Development Model which have made digital technology the backbone of our country’s economic development.
The first edition was initiated by the ministry on November 28, 2017 in Rabat, under the theme “Digital transformation, lever for the development of agriculture and agro-industry” while the second was organized on April 18, 2019 on the occasion of the holding of the 14th edition of the International Agricultural Show in Morocco (SIAM) in Meknes, around “Digital transformation, for an attractive agricultural sector and generator of employment for young people in the rural world”.
These meetings are an opportunity for the exchange of experiences between experts and participants, in order to communicate about the progress and digitalization projects of the agricultural and agro-industrial sector driven by disruptive technologies, such as satellite imagery, “blockchain”, artificial intelligence, connected objects, drones, etc. They also allow for exploring new business and partnership opportunities in this field.
