President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife Kim Kun-hee visited a K-POP entertainment venue with Japanese Prime Minister’s wife Yuko Kishida on the 6th and discussed cultural exchanges between the two countries.

On the afternoon of that day, Mrs. Kim visited a K-POP entertainment company with Mrs. Yuko and held a meeting with Japanese trainees and members of a group preparing to debut in Japan.

Mrs. Kim told the trainees, “I am glad that you came to Korea to pursue your dreams,” and “Korea and Japan have many cultural similarities, and if Korean and Japanese artists merge with each other, the power of Asian culture will grow.”

He continued, “Korea’s music industry is growing very fast, and exports to Japan account for 39% of the total music industry exports,” emphasizing the growth of cultural exchanges between the two countries.

When asked by Ms. Kim about her motivation for coming to Korea, one trainee answered, “I came to Korea after seeing BTS’s performance and being deeply moved.” Another artist said, “I first encountered K-pop seven years ago when I was a backup dancer for SHINee at Tokyo Dome, and that’s when I decided to become a K-pop artist.”

Mrs. Kim continued, “K-POP is enjoying unimaginable popularity in countries around the world,” and asked, “I wonder what is the reason why it is able to lead global popular culture in this way.”

Regarding this, the entertainment company representative explained, “K-POP is based on the ‘fandom business model,’” and “Unlike in North America, artists have formed fandoms by trying to share the pain and joy of the times with their fans, which is the driving force behind the growth of the K-POP industry.”

Another official added, “As society becomes more segmented due to the development of social media, people feel more lonely,” and “The secret to K-POP’s success is to relieve people’s loneliness through active communication between artists and fans.”

At the end of the meeting, Ms. Yuko said, “You are the pride of Japan as you work hard as part of K-POP, which is popular worldwide,” and encouraged them by saying, “Thanks to your efforts, the people of Korea and Japan are opening their hearts to each other and deepening their understanding.”

Mrs. Kim said, “As the silver population increases around the world, the silver market in the music industry will also grow significantly,” and suggested, “It would be a good idea for K-POP to explore the silver layer based on an analog feel.”

After the meeting, Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Yuko toured the facilities, including the choreography practice room, recording studio, and styling room, and heard explanations about the album production and trainee training process.

This is the first meeting between Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Yuko since September of last year. The two met more than five times last year and strengthened their friendship, the presidential office explained.
