Microsoft (MS), a major supporter of OpenAI, has reportedly added OpenAI to its list of competitors.

According to CNBC on the 31st of last month (local time), MS added OpenAI to the list of competitors in its latest annual report released the day before. The list has included Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta for several years, and OpenAI has been added this time.

In the report, MS identified OpenAI as a competitor in artificial intelligence (AI) service provision, search, and news advertising.

Companies that need access to AI models can either do business with OpenAI or use Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service. Those looking for an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT can use Microsoft’s AI chatbot, Copilot. Last week, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, also released its own search engine called SearchGPT.

The relationship between MS and OpenAI, which have a long-term partnership, is gradually changing. MS is OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider and uses OpenAI’s AI models in various products. MS is also the largest investor, having reportedly invested $13 billion in OpenAI.
CNBC reported that it showed them moving into each other’s turf.

When asked about the contents of this report, an OpenAI spokesperson explained that there has been no change in the relationship with Microsoft, and that the partnership between the two companies was established on the premise that there is competition between them. He added that Microsoft is still a good partner for OpenAI.

However, CNBC recently described the relationship between MS and OpenAI as eventful.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reportedly wasn’t briefed in advance when OpenAI’s board ousted CEO Sam Altman in November of last year. When Altman returned, OpenAI gave Microsoft a board seat, but Microsoft gave up the seat earlier this month.
