Through an articulated work between the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and the Ambato-based Rotary Club with the Ecuadorian Medical Mission, a total of 75 free surgeries were performed at the Ambato General Hospital, Tungurahua province, to benefit children and women from the community with limited resources and various pathologies.

Of the surgical interventions performed, 60 are general surgeries (hernias and cholecystectomies) and 15 surgeries are gynecological (hysterectomies). The support brigades provided all the supplies required in the interventions, while the Hospital provided all the surgical areas and the health professionals for the surgeries.

The mission is made up of surgeons, nurses and support staff. The humanitarian medical brigade aims to intervene with patients with limited resources, who agreed to the exams and pre-evaluation at the Tungurahua Volunteer Association, after the evaluations with foreign doctors at the Ambato Regional Hospital.

Brian P. Gleason, a gynecologist from the medical brigade, reported that “this activity has been carried out in various health homes for more than 20 years and is coordinated with the Ecuador Medical Mission, which is a group of 70 American doctors who arrive with complete professional teams. and they bring complementary supplies, medicines and equipment for general, plastic, gynecology and traumatology surgeries”.

“I underwent surgery on the uterus, the foreign doctors and the hospital have given me all the support for my surgery and recovery, it is good to know that low-income people can be well cared for,” said Mayra Pilamunga, beneficiary user.

These actions in favor of citizens will continue in the coming years, as an inter-institutional and cooperation commitment.
