Mateen Cleaves Joins Phoenix Suns as Player Development Coach
A strong Michigan State connection continues to grow within the Phoenix Suns organization as former Spartans point guard Mateen Cleaves has been hired as a player development coach, effective July 10, 2025. The move reunites Cleaves with Suns owner Mat Ishbia, his former teammate at Michigan State University.

A Familiar Face for Ishbia

He and Ishbia were teammates during their time in East Lansing, contributing to the Spartans’ storied basketball legacy. This pre-existing rapport is expected to foster a collaborative and productive environment within the Suns organization.

Cleaves enjoyed a decorated collegiate career at Michigan State, becoming one of the most celebrated players in program history. He then translated that success to the NBA, spending six seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Seattle SuperSonics.
Following his playing career, Cleaves remained connected to Ishbia, joining United Wholesale Mortgage in 2019 as a leadership development coach. He was subsequently promoted in 2021 to lead the entire leadership development team, demonstrating his aptitude for mentoring and skill enhancement. This experience positions him well to excel in his new role with the Suns.
