The meeting discussed the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure and the development of 5G technology to reduce the digital divide in the country

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) is exploring options to articulate joint work with telecommunications regulatory bodies from bordering countries, in order to reduce the digital divide in the country, with special emphasis on the Amazon.

This was announced by the Vice Minister of Communications, Patricia Carreño, during a working meeting that she held with Pablo Palacios Ochoa, Program Officer, of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized organization in telecommunications of the United Nations Organization .

“We are interested in generating incentives for the deployment of 4G infrastructure and services in the jungle of our country, where our geography and population dispersion constitute an enormous challenge,” said the vice minister.

He added that for this, it is important to learn about the experiences of neighboring countries that face a similar geography, as well as to identify the deployment of fiber optics achieved in their territories, for which the support of the ITU could be essential.

During the meeting, different initiatives for the development of 5G technology in the region, the studies carried out and the importance of the 3.5 GHz band were also discussed.

In this regard, within the framework of the agreement between Peru and the ITU, the international organization could support the MTC in hiring a consultant to assess the 3.5 GHz band, which would allow progress in its rearrangement and subsequent bidding through Proinvestment.

“We are focused on the design of policies and measures for the massive deployment of 4G services nationwide. However, in parallel, we are already evaluating some alternatives for the reorganization and bidding of the band for 5G”, concluded Carreño.
