On June 27, 17-year-old Nahel M. was killed during a traffic check. The fundraiser for the police officer Florian M., who fired the fatal shot, has been criticized.

Nanterre – Through the GoFundMe platform, the well-known French right Jean Messiha has one Fundraiser initiated for the suspected gunman in the case of the youth Nahel M. Almost 1.5 million euros had been collected by Tuesday evening (July 4th). Messiha is a former adviser to Marine Le Pen, a supporter of far-right politician Éric Zemmour and a member of his Reconquête party.

Nahel M. was hit by a deadly shot at close range when he tried to drive away from a police checkpoint. Nahel’s mother assumes that the police officer has racist motives.

The alleged shooter Florian M. is now in custody and is accused of manslaughter. In the description text for the fundraiser, Messiha still defends the police officer. He “did his job” and is now paying the “ultimate price” for it. Messiha also called for support for Florian M. and “all our law enforcement officers”. Violence in France has continued to escalate since the death of Nahel M.

Despite criticism – the fundraiser continues

The call for donations and the strong response caused outrage. Left-wing politician Mathilde Panot called the action on Twitter a “shame” and “an insult to Nahel’s memory and to all victims of police violence.”

The GoFundMe platform rejects calls for the fundraiser to be stopped. in one Statement to Euronews it says that the call for donations is “according to the current specifications” in accordance with the rules. According to the terms of use on the platform, it is actually forbidden to collect money for “the legal defense of alleged financial and violent crimes”. In the case of Florian M., the money would not go directly to him, but to his family.

Racially motivated donations?

Compared to Jean Messiha’s controversial fundraiser, Nahel’s family’s appeal has had less success. So far, less than 200,000 euros have been donated, reports Le Monde. Such discrepancies are often noticed. As in the US the black one Jordan Neely was strangled to death by a veteran on the New York subway, the perpetrator also received more donations than the deceased’s family.
