The resignation, announced on July 20, 2026, follows an internal review of improper interactions with a female member of the public. The matter was referred to the police after both parties leveled allegations of harassment against each other.

The departure of the 58-year-old, who served as Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and acting minister-in-charge of Muslim affairs, comes approximately one month after Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s office received an email from the woman regarding her interactions with the MP. Prime Minister Wong stated that he asked for the matter to be looked into immediately, with both the Associate Professor and the woman being interviewed separately to understand their respective accounts.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the investigation found that most of their interactions took place through online messages, supplemented by meetings on the sidelines of public events. Following the referral to the police, the authorities conducted an investigation in consultation with the Attorney-General’s Chambers. It was assessed that no criminal offense had been committed by either party, and consequently, no criminal action will be taken. However, a separate determination was made regarding the standards expected of a political office holder. Upon reflection, Associate Professor Faishal accepted that his conduct fell short of these standards and tendered his resignation.

Observers noted that the swift handling of the scandal by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong was intended to contain political fallout. In a Facebook post following the announcement, the former MP addressed his constituents: “I am deeply sorry to have let down my residents and supporters, who placed their trust in me. I know that this news will come as a surprise to many. I hope you will understand my decision not to say more, out of respect for my family’s privacy.” He added: “Over the years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside many of you – meeting your families, listening to your concerns, and working together to build a stronger and better Singapore. For the grassroots volunteers who worked alongside the former MP during his tenure at Nee Soon GRC from 2011 to 2025, the news has been difficult to process. Volunteers described him as a family-oriented and selfless leader who was careful in his professional conduct.
Mr. Benny Lian, a former grassroots volunteer at Nee Soon Central, described the former MP’s approach to public interactions: He’s very careful, especially when female residents come to him for selfies. He gets someone else to be with him in the photo … he will say, ‘Benny, we come together to take’.
Mr. Lewis Yong, who assisted the former MP from 2015 to 2025, expressed disbelief at the allegations. I was with him almost every day… He didn’t have time for this kind of nonsense,
Mr. Yong said. I can’t accept it.
Mr. Yong also recalled the former MP’s personal habits, noting he would often have breakfast with his wife before work and join grassroots leaders for birthday celebrations. Other volunteers highlighted his dedication to the community, including a project initiated about 10 years ago to help lower-income residents purchase groceries at a lower price, and his practice of using his own car to fetch residents with mobility issues to and from their homes.

The resignation forces a rapid restructuring within the government. SMS Zaqy Mohamad will be appointed Acting Minister for Muslim Affairs. Prime Minister Wong noted that the remaining MPs in the Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC will continue to serve residents in Kembangan. In his statement, Prime Minister Wong acknowledged the former MP’s service, stating, “Associate Professor Faishal made significant contributions over two decades of public service. He played key roles in advancing initiatives that strengthened community resilience, supported the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-offenders, and improved the outcomes for vulnerable families. He has worked hard as an MP and served his residents diligently. I thank him for his many contributions.”
