Dhaka: Bangladesh interim government leader Professor Muhammad Yunus visited the Dhakeshwari temple in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday. After visiting the temple, he also interacted with the people of the Hindu community of the country. Dhakeshwari temple is one of the most sacred Shaktipeeths and the largest Hindu temples of Bangladesh. The temple is highly revered among Bengali Hindus. Mohammad Yunus’s visit has come at a time when minority Hindus have been attacked in many parts of the country. Minorities have also protested against this. Yunus is currently seen trying to normalize the situation in the country. Along with Professor Yunus, legal advisor Asif Nazrul and religious affairs advisor AFM Khalid Hussain also reached the temple.
According to The Daily Star report, Mohammad Yunus at Dhaka’s Dhakeshwari National Temple sought everyone’s cooperation to normalise the situation and also tried to assure them of security. Professor Yunus assured the Hindus at the temple, “Rights are equal for everyone. We are all people with the same rights. Do not discriminate between us.” On his government, he said, “At this time, everyone should help us and give us some time. If we fail in government, then criticise us.”

Conversation with responsible people of Hindu society

Mohammad Yunus tried to understand the situation by talking to Puja Udjapan Parishad President Basudeb Dhar, General Secretary Santosh Sharma, Sarbajanin Puja Committee President Jayanta Kumar Dev, General Secretary Tapas Chandra Pal, Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council’s Kajol Debnath, Council’s Joint General Secretary Manindra Kumar Nath in the temple premises. Talking about the meeting, Basudeb Dhar said that we had a cordial meeting with Professor Yunus. We congratulated Dr. Yunus on assuming office and explained our problems. We have received assurance of all kinds of cooperation from his side.

On Monday, interim government head Professor Mohammad Yunus also held talks with Hindu students and youth on the incidents of violence against the religious minority community and vandalism in temples in Bangladesh. In this meeting, the government talked about the security issue of the Hindu community. After the meeting, it was said that the interim government of the country will take steps to protect Hindus and other religious minorities as attacks on religious minorities are a matter of concern.

Hindus are the largest religious minority in Bangladesh, the population of Hindus in the country is about 10 percent. After the sudden resignation of Sheikh Hasina and her leaving the country last week, the Hindu community has been the target of mobs. There have been attacks on Hindu houses, temples and shops in many cities. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad has claimed 205 violent incidents against minorities in 52 districts.
