Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, known for his innovative microcredit system for low-income people, will lead an “interim government” in Bangladesh, following the dissolution of the Parliament and the flight of the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.
The Bangladeshi presidency said the decision to form an interim government under Yunus was taken during a meeting between the president Mohamed Shahabuddin, military leaders and student leaders who have been protesting since the beginning of July.
In the brutal clashes at the beginning of the week, 122 people lost their livesrepresenting the day with the most deaths since the start of the protests, coinciding with the escape of the Prime Minister.
Through a statement, Shiplu Zaman, presidential spokesman, announced the dissolution of Parliament, one of the Main demands of these student demonstrations, which overthrew the Prime Minister.
As a preventive measure, USA ordered his non-essential staff to abandon Bangladesh. Although the embassy in Dhaka will continue to operate its basic functions, diplomats and their families have been evacuated.
Bangladesh’s army chief announced a meeting with student leaders after the military took control of the country following the protests which forced Hasina to resign.
Among the consequences of Hasina’s resignation, AKM Wahiduzzaman, spokesman for the Bangladesh National Party, revealed that Khaleda Zia, former prime minister and opposition leader, was released after years of house arrest the day after the change of government.
