Climate change is seriously affecting water and food resources, and depletion of water resources is leading to a number of diseases.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Trend, this was stated by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, President COP29 Mukhtar Babaev during a speech on the second day of Climate Action Week in Baku (Baku Climate Action Week).

The minister noted that the impact of climate change on agriculture is already noticeable.

“Agriculture makes up a significant part of Azerbaijan’s economy. Low rainfall in recent years has led to a 10 percent reduction in food collection. Water levels in the Caspian Sea have also dropped, which is seriously affecting the coastal zone. If we do not take action, these consequences will increase. Global warming could already displace two million people. More research and new systems are needed,” he added.

It should be noted that the Week of Action runs from September 30 to October 4, 2024 and is being held in Baku for the first time.

The event will form the basis of the climate agenda ahead of WCOOP 29 in Baku in November.

Climate Action Week brings together key stakeholders from a range of sectors such as politics, finance, trade, investment, science, arts, culture, civil society and media.

The first half of the week (September 30 – October 2) is dedicated to climate solutions involving government agencies, academia and the private sector. In the second half (October 3-4), the emphasis will be on science, education, art, culture and other sectors.
