Mulayam Singh is a leader who entered the political arena from the wrestling arena. Mulayam was a socialist political figure who controlled the dynamics of Indian politics. Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on November 22, 1939 in a farming family in Etawah, Madhya Uttar Pradesh. Father Sudhar Singh wanted his son to become a wrestler. But it was Nathu Singh, a local socialist leader, who realized from a wrestling venue in Mainpuri that the role of Rashtriya Goda suited a young Yadav named Mulayam. Nathu Singh is Mulayam’s political mentor.

The leader who influenced Mulayam was the socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia. Lohia’s convictions about people’s equality and other social-justice issues greatly impressed Mulam. He also stood up for the rights of the lower caste Hindus and the minority Muslim population. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s work based on Lohia’s principles marked his subsequent political career in Indian politics and the Hindi heartland.

A graduate in political science from Agra University, Mulayam Singh won the Socialist Party nomination in 1967 and became the youngest member of the Legislative Assembly. Despite repeating his victory in 1974, he was arrested in 1975 during the National Emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He spent 19 months in prison. After his release in 1977, he again contested for the Legislative Assembly and won. He became the president of Lok Dal in Uttar Pradesh. But the party split at the end of the year. In 1999, he contested for Lok Sabha from Sambhal and Kanauj constituencies and won. The Kanauj constituency resigned and Sambhal stood down. He became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2003 while still a member of the Lok Sabha and in January 2004 he won from the Gunnar Assembly constituency. In the 2004 general elections, while a member of the legislature, he sought and won a seat in the Lok Sabha from Mainpuri constituency. But after the election, he resigned from Mainpuri constituency and continued as a member of the assembly. In 2014, he contested and won from Asamgarh and Mainpuri constituencies. Resigned from Mainpuri constituency and retained Azamgarh.
