ROMA. Mullah Krekar, an Iraqi Kurdish Islamic leader and militant living in Norway, founder in 2001 of the jihadist group Ansar al-Islam, close to Al Qaeda, and who he is serving a 12-year prison sentence in Bolzano, Italy for terrorism confirmed in 2022 by the Supreme Court, wants to return to the Scandinavian country: this was revealed by his lawyer, Brynjar Meling, who intends to turn to the United Nations accusing Italy of “violating the rights” of his client.

“We are working to bring Krekar home to Norway. He still has his family here. His family are wealthy Norwegian citizens, with good jobs and social responsibility. So there is no reason why he should not return here,” the lawyer said, speaking to Norwegian TV2. “His basic human rights have been seriously violated in Italy. Krekar has had a sentence where he was not heard or allowed to testify. In reality, his sentence is unjust,” said lawyer Meling.

Krekar, whose name is Faraj Ahmad Najmuddin, had been living in Norway since 1991, where he arrived as a refugee, and has been on the United Nations terrorist list since 2006, after declaring his support for Osama bin Laden. In 2019 Krekar was convicted in absentia for terrorism in Bolzano and in 2020 he was arrested by police in Norway and handed over to the Italian authorities.
