When a new Call of Duty game is released, most fans are most interested in the multiplayer mode. We played the new content before it was released.
Along with “Super Mario” and “Pokémon,” “Call of Duty” is one of the absolute blockbusters among video game series. When the new part of the popular action shooter, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” is released on October 25, the story will largely be in the background.
Only about a third of all buyers were interested in the plot of the last episodes of the series and completed the single-player missions. For the majority of fans, the heated multiplayer mode is the only focus. t-online was at the “Call of Duty NEXT” in Washington, DC, where the most important new game elements were revealed.
“Black Ops 6” is already the 21st part of the first-person shooter series. This time, the fictional story takes players to the early 1990s and revolves around political intrigues and conspiracies during the Gulf War.
Contemporary historical figures such as former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also play important roles. These elements of the plot are used as the thematic backbone for the design of the multiplayer mode.
The game’s visuals are state-of-the-art. “Black Ops 6” may not be a modern graphic marvel, but the animations, playing field and character design, and effects are absolutely worth seeing and convincing.
The multiplayer mode of “Call of Duty” is also so popular because it offers a reliable gaming experience that changes little with each episode. “Black Ops 6” is no exception at first glance – the game again offers fast-paced 6-on-6 battles on playing fields, although these have shrunk compared to last year’s adventure.
In order to differentiate itself even more from previous editions of the series, developer Treyarch has come up with two special innovations. Firstly, the so-called omni-movement. While the control of the characters is usually rather limited, this new game mechanic offers a much more complex experience that allows for smoother movement in all directions.
With the omni-movement, players can virtually chain individual movements together across all game modes: for example, if you previously jumped through a window and then wanted to run on without a transition, there was a subtle but noticeable pause between these movements for experienced players, which is now no longer the case. In practice, this small difference can make all the difference in a firefight.
However, the gameplay is not that easy for newbies. That’s why there will be a practice mode called “Protocol” in which you can practice and perfect these Hollywood-style stunts before jumping into the fray.
Our experience with the game so far shows that, until this new system becomes second nature, it is more likely that experienced players will benefit from it. However, the developers have also built in an “intelligent movement” – these are switchable sprint, climbing and ducking aids that are particularly helpful for beginners.
Anyone who likes fast-paced first-person shooters will probably not be able to ignore “Call of Duty” in the future. The makers are adapting the popular game principle in nuances, but these bring noticeable changes, especially for experienced players.
In “Black Ops 6,” “Call of Duty” returns to its roots with smaller battlefields, but at the same time tries to give the series a fresh impetus with a new movement system. According to our first impressions, this works well. However, the finished game will have to prove whether the gap between advanced and casual players will not become too wide.
“Call of Duty Black Ops 6” will be released on October 25th for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Windows. The game is rated USK 18+.
