Multiple Sclerosis, 8 Young Women on Palinuro Ship in September – Health and Wellbeing

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 28 – In September, a group of women affected by multiple sclerosis will have an experience aboard the training ship Palinuro, a sailing ship of the Italian Navy, as part of the Esprimo project created by the University of Verona (Univr), an idea developed with the Tender to Nave Italia Foundation (TTNI), the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association (AISM) with its Foundation (FISM), and the Italian Navy.
Esprimo is conceived by researchers from the Department of Neuroscience, Biomedicine and Movement of Univr, led by Prof. Michela Rimondini. The results in terms of autonomy, self-esteem and psychomotor rehabilitation of the two-year period 23/24 with patients between 18 and 45 years old on the brigantine Nave Italia have prompted an expansion of the objectives, and 8 young adults will embark on Palinuro in the first week of September.
The goal is to create an adventurous path in nature to promote the process of adaptation of the disease in young patients and monitor the motor, psychological and relational aspects integrated into the challenging experience of navigation. In parallel, Univr and Aism will monitor the learning process, benefits, reflections and changes.
Motor parameters and sleep quality will be monitored with wearable sensors from boarding to the end of the trip. It will be possible to monitor the intensity and duration of movement, cardiac activity, blood pressure parameters, hours of sleep, muscle fatigue, and so on.
“Esprimo”, underlines Rimondini, associate professor of Clinical Psychology at Univr, “has been working since 2018 to support the resilience of young people with multiple sclerosis, promoting adaptation to the disease, social inclusion and fighting the stigma linked to the condition of disability and fragility”. “Far from closed health paths in gyms where you do physiotherapy exercises”, says the scientific director of Ttni Paolo Cornaglia Ferraris, “the adventure on Palinuro promises significant motivational and emotional advantages”. “This initiative has a strong community value: one of the main objectives is to destigmatize the pathology and disability, raising public awareness on the issues that characterize the project”, highlights Jessica Podda, researcher of Aism and its Foundation Fism.
