Multiple People Shot Following Altercation in Holyoke, Massachusetts

HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) — A violent altercation on a downtown street in Holyoke, Massachusetts, led to a shooting that left at least three people injured on Wednesday. One of the victims was a passenger on a bus passing through the area. Authorities have not yet provided any information on the conditions of the victims or announced any arrests. However, state police have stated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of Sargeant and Maple streets, and law enforcement officials were alerted through a 911 call as well as notifications from ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection system. State police immediately dispatched patrols, K9 teams, and investigative units to assist the Holyoke Police Department in analyzing the crime scene and identifying potential suspects in the vicinity.

The investigation into the incident is being directed by the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, which has not yet responded to media inquiries seeking more information. Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia’s office informed the public that he is aware of the shooting and will provide additional details later in the afternoon.

Holyoke, a city situated approximately 90 miles west of Boston, has a population of nearly 38,000 residents. Aside from this recent incident, it is also known for housing the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
